The directors, teachers, and staff at Phoenix Children’s Academy Private Preschool, Surprise want your entire family to feel at home every time you step into our preschool. We believe that the care of young children creates a partnership between family and school and we constantly communicate with you about your child’s daily activities and academic progress. Our playground is an amazing place for young children to explore and play. The kids especially love our covered play areas, basketball court, and our splash pad. We also have a Smart Board, which allows us to engage our preschool students in a variety of educational games in the morning and afternoon.
Thanks to the flexibility of our Ascend Curriculum, we take an individualized approach to early childhood education and encourage every child to progress towards age-appropriate goals at their natural pace. New skills are introduced sequentially in 9 different learning domains each month and activities are modified to fit the interests and current skill level of each child. This skill-based approach to early education ensures that every child feels engaged, supported, and challenged and makes learning fun!
Another significant part of our curriculum is our Kind Child program. Kind Child is a year-long program for children ages two and older that helps our teachers nurture and strengthen every child’s social and emotional skills. We have found that when we focus on the emotional well-being of each child in our care, we strengthen our school as well. We are confident that Kind Child will continue to strengthen the culture of our entire preschool center by elevating every child’s feelings of happiness, improving their well-being, and enriching their friendships.

Our school director, has been with our preschool since we opened in 2009. In addition, our teachers collectively have more than 75 years of experience in either a preschool or daycare setting. We all love what we do and have a passion for working in child care! As a member of the Surprise community, we think it’s important to be involved in community events. We are a proud sponsor of Surprise Parks and Rec and participate in the Surprise Party every December. We also sponsor a day at the local ballpark for spring training, where families come out and have a great time enjoying baseball and ballpark food. We also have fun family events throughout the year including Parent’s Night Out, Trunk or Treat, science fair, and school picnics.
I have been working in the Early Childhood environment since 2014. I started out volunteering in the Children’s Ministry at my church. I discovered that I loved working with children and decided that I wanted to make a career out of it. In my free time I enjoy reading, cooking and watching movies with my family and friends.
I have been working with children for the past ten years. My favorite part of working with children is being a part of their growth and development. I love seeing the excitement on their faces when they learn something new—it’s such a rewarding experience. I value the positive impact I can make by encouraging and supporting their curiosity and love for learning. I enjoy traveling and exploring different parts of Arizona—Sedona is one of my favorite places to visit for its beautiful scenery and peaceful atmosphere. I also enjoy hiking and paddle boarding, and spending quality time with my family and playing on my Nintendo Switch.
Laura Hlushko has dedicated more than 20 years to early childhood education. She studied Early Childhood Education at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and Rio Salado College. Laura is passionate about the impact the early years have on a child’s development and enjoys being part of the many important milestones children and families experience during those formative years.
Laura began her career in education in 2000 and spent 13 years teaching kindergarten before moving into childcare and preschool leadership. She values lifelong learning and believes growth is important for both children and adults. Outside of work, Laura enjoys spending time with her adult children, relaxing with her dogs, and crafting. She looks forward to partnering with families and supporting children as they learn, grow, and explore the world around them.
