Previously known as Gateway Academy, we’re a four-star accredited private preschool and daycare boasting an amazing, highly-skilled team of teachers and caregivers. At our preschool and daycare, we strive to meet the many needs of the working families in the Huntersville community by providing outstanding care and education for children, ages six weeks through pre-kindergarten.

In 2024, 100% of the Pre-K children assessed at our school demonstrated Advanced Readiness for Kindergarten.
Our inspiring early learning center encourages children to learn through play every day. Students enjoy modern playgrounds featuring exciting outdoor learning opportunities, including a rock climbing wall, musical instruments, and an outdoor art easel. Family involvement is an important part of our daycare and preschool community. As a small, close-knit early learning center, we believe families are an integral part of the program and encourage parents to actively participate in their child’s educational journey. Parents have opportunities to see their children’s teachers daily and to participate in the program as their schedules allow. This close relationship enhances each child’s personal growth and achievement and promotes a secure and safe environment. Communication between teacher and families adds to each child’s learning environment and offers support for continued success.

Our Approach to Early Childhood Education
Ascend Curriculum
Our Ascend Curriculum supports the academic, physical, emotional, and creative development of every child. It includes engaging activities in areas such as Cultural Understanding, Baby Signs, Literacy, Mathematics, and Technology.
We believe children learn best when experiences are tailored to their interests. Our teachers personalize learning activities and use small group instruction to better support each child’s individual needs and developmental stage, including infants and toddlers who benefit from early exposure to our curriculum.
Kind Child
A cornerstone of our preschool curriculum is our Kind Child program. The goal of Kind Child is to promote happiness, build positive friendships, and support strong social-emotional development in every child. Through this program, we introduce valuable character traits such as Responsibility, Thankfulness, Sharing, and a Positive Self-Image. We have found that when we attend to the emotional well-being of each child in our care, we also strengthen our school!
We also incorporate Baby Signs® into our infant program for children through two years to support early communication and language development.

Cadence KickStart™ Soccer
Big Fun. Little Players. Growing Confidence.
Cadence KickStart™ Soccer is a high-energy enrichment program designed to build confidence, coordination, and teamwork through fun, age-appropriate soccer play. Led by the teachers your child already knows and trusts, it’s seamlessly built into the school day.
Program Highlights:
- Designed for ages 3–5
- 12-week program (once per week)
- 40–50 minute sessions
- Builds balance, coordination, and motor skills
- Encourages listening, teamwork, and confidence
- No prior soccer experience needed

Gwendolyn Ashe
School Director
A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Gwendolyn has been in the Early Childhood Education field since 2013. She has a bachelor’s degree from Winston-Salem State University in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Sociology and Education. She has taught in a variety of ages groups throughout her years but found her love for teaching in the 3-year-old classroom. Her love of teaching inspired a love for learning and growth in her classroom. She has always aspired to be a director and someday own her own childcare facility. To start on the path to make her aspirations come true, she joined a leadership training program, and the rest is history. This allowed her to move up to a management position and start her administration journey. She is so excited to be a part of the Cadence Academy family.
Symone Chillous
Assistant Director
A native of Charleston, SC, Symone has worked in the field of Early Childhood since 2011. She studied at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she majored in Exercise Science. After college she began her career in childcare and discovered that that is where her true passion lies. Throughout her years in the field, Symone has worked with children of all ages and found that she was particularly fond of teaching toddlers. Symone later moved her way up to a management position as Program Administrator for Early Head Start and then as an Assistant Director. She has a passion to lead, to help families, and to ensure that every child receives quality education and care. She is thrilled to join the Cadence Academy family and looks forward to building relationships with all the families and staff.
