Canterbury Academy at Shawnee Crossings first opened its doors in 2006 and we strive every day to create an enriching preschool environment where children can blossom and grow. Our caring staff utilizes a Montessori-based approach to education which gives our young students every opportunity to get the most out of these precious early years.
Our students are encouraged to be active and creative explorers, as well as independent, self-confident, and inquisitive learners. Thanks to the flexibility built into our Ascend Curriculum, each child is educated as an individual and encouraged to progress at his or her natural ability while still reaching desired age-level goals.
Our primary objective is to create enriching learning environments that encourage social, emotional, creative, and cognitive development. The Montessori-based Learning Centers we have in each of our daycare and preschool classrooms are continually filled with content-rich activities for young children to explore. We believe that every child has the ability to learn and to teach, and that a child who enjoys learning will always seek challenges in life.
Our preschool and daycare programs are based upon the Montessori principles of self-direction and experiential education. We promote a thoughtful and sensitive atmosphere in each classroom, and we support cooperation between children as they learn from one another.
Thanks to the flexibility of our Ascend Curriculum, we take an individualized approach to early childhood education and encourage every child to progress towards age-appropriate goals at their natural pace. New skills are introduced sequentially in 9 different learning domains each month and activities are modified to fit the interests and current skill level of each child. This skill-based approach to early education ensures that every child feels engaged, supported, and challenged and makes learning fun!
Canterbury Academy at Shawnee Crossings is in western Shawnee just to the southeast of the intersection of the K-7 and Shawnee Mission Parkway. If you’re traveling on Shawnee Mission Pkwy, you’ll want to turn south on Hilltop Rd, then west on Midland Dr. If you’re on K-7, turn east on 75th St and immediately north on Midland Dr. Our preschool center is at 22900 Midland, Shawnee, KS 66226.
Welcome to our school! My name is Nicole and I have a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Pittsburg State University and 26 years’ experience working with children. I have been a classroom teacher, education coordinator and center director. I am married with two children and have two dogs. My daughter Cass is a teacher here at Canterbury and my son Dylan is attending JCCC. I love to travel and we have taken our children to 45 states. I also love to spend time with my family, cuddle with my dogs and drink coffee.
Mrs. Ashley grew up in Derby, KS and received her bachelor’s degree in prek-12 physical education from Wichita State University while working at the Child Development Center. She taught elementary PE for the next 5 years and middle school PE for the following 2 years after her move to Shawnee. She completed her master’s degree in educational leadership from Emporia State University in 2021. She began working at Canterbury Academy in 2022. Ashley enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband Scott, and daughters Audrey & Demi who also attend Canterbury.
Miss Ashly from Pre-K and Miss Sheryl from the Toddler Room. Miss Ashly holds a bachelor’s degree with a focus in psychology from the University of Oklahoma. Her personal journey as a parent has deeply influenced her approach to teaching, fueling a passion for creating an inclusive and nurturing classroom environment. She is dedicated to helping every child feel accepted and valued, regardless of their background or learning style.
Miss Sheryl brings a wealth of experience and warmth to our Toddler Room. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and has a natural gift for connecting with young children. Her gentle guidance and educational expertise help lay a strong foundation for lifelong learning. We are grateful for the heart, dedication, and excellence both educators bring to our school community every day.
