How Loud?

Sounds are all around us.  Children hear sounds everywhere, but do they understand how sounds work?  This month we are teaching children about volume or how quiet or loud a sound is.  Some sounds are so quiet you can barely hear them, while other sounds are so loud, they give you a headache.  Here are a few volume activities you can do with your child:

  • As you listen to music in the car, ask your child if the volume is quiet or loud.
  • Sing a familiar song, such as “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” or “The Wheels on the Bus” at a normal volume. Then, sing the song very quietly or loudly.  See if your child can identify the volume.  Children love this super silly game!

Have a Family Dance Party.  Play music with a variety of volumes and see if your child can match their dance movements to the volume of each song. Tiptoe or sway to quiet songs and stomp around to loud songs.
