Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Recycling is an important part of our lives. We have to help save the planet for the future and what better way than to get our kids involved. The process of making paper out of old paper scraps is simple! You get the paper wet and turn it into a pulp, you then press the pulp against a screen to remove the liquid, then let dry!  This process is full of sensory and science exploration and is a wonderful way to teach our youth the importance of reduce, reuse, recycle!

Materials:

  • Paper Scraps
  • Water
  • Wire Screen

Age-appropriate Adaptations:

  • Two-year-olds—Have your child help mush the paper in the water, it is guaranteed fun, there is nothing two year olds love more than squishing and mushing. You can have your child help you scoop the pulp out of the container and press it onto the screen. When the paper is done give it to your child for coloring!
  • Three-year-olds—Ask your child what recycling means to them, help them to fill in the blanks. Test out their ability to follow three step directions step one add water, step two mush paper, step three add to screen.
  • Four-/Five-year-olds—Give the children the outline of how to create the paper and let them work independently be there for support. At this age children are able to work independently and fine great pride in completing a task themselves.
