Science & Sensory Activity: Color Blend

Supplies: Ziploc Bags and Different Colors of Paint

Directions: Have your child add different colors of paint to the bag, zip it up and let them blend the colors together to create a new color! Make sure that you seal the zip lock bag with clear packing tape to ensure that it does not come open.

Skills Learned: Develops color recognition skills and by having your child mix their own combination of paints it is a wonderful mix of science and art!

 

Fine Motor Activity: Cotton Ball Counting

Supplies: Tape and Cotton Balls

Directions: Show your child how to put the cotton balls onto the tape, while counting aloud. Then have your child mimic those movements while they count.

Skills Learned: Math and quantity recognition. Develops gross motor skills by using movement and concentration. This also builds on their ability to follow one-three step instruction.

 

Gross Motor Activity: Hula Hoop Hop…Skip…Jump!

Supplies: Hula Hoops and Chalk

Directions: Lay the hula hoops out on the ground. The children can hop, skip or jump from hula hoop to hula hoop while singing a variety of songs. To take it one step further, use your chalk to put a number inside each hula hoop then have your child count as they move from hula hoop to hula hoop.

Skills Learned: Math and quantity recognition. Develops gross motor skills by using movement and balance. This also builds on their ability to follow one-three step instruction.

 

Math & Manipulative Activity: Pipe Cleaner Threading

Supplies: Colander and Pipe Cleaners

Directions: Have your child flip the colander over so that the holes are facing up. Then have them take pipe cleaners and thread them through the holes of the colander.

Skills Learned: Language development using descriptive and positional words such as in, out, under, over, beside, etc. Hand-eye coordination and control. Math and quantity recognition. Develops color recognition skills.

 

Language Learning Activity: Popsicle Sticks In A Jar

Supplies: Plastic Jar With Lid and Colored Popsicle Sticks

Directions: Cut slits in the lid of the plastic jar. Spread out the colored Popsicle sticks and have your child put them through the slits in the top of the jar.

Skills Learned: Language development using descriptive and positional words such as in, out, under, over, beside, etc. Hand-eye coordination and control. Hand-eye coordination and control. Develops color recognition skills.

 

Creative Expression Activity: Water Painting

Supplies: Something to Paint With (Paint Brush/Sponge) and A Bowl of Water

Directions: Take the bowl of water and whatever your child has chosen to paint with outside. Have your child dip the brush in the water and paint on the sidewalk. As the paintings evaporate take the opportunity to discuss the water cycle.

Skills Learned: Builds their creativity and confidence to experiment and develop early writing skills. Promotes scientific thinking including predictions, observations, comparison, reasoning, data gathering and experimentation.
