Cultural Understanding Lesson
Children love to see our Community Helpers in action. Doctors, nurses, firefighters, police officers, mail carriers, teachers, military service members, garbage truck drivers, and grocery store personnel are all important to our community and everyday living. During this international emergency, talk with your child about how these people can be helpful to us. Encourage your child to be respectful of the men and women in these roles.
Now is a good time to review with your child what to do in the event of other emergencies. Practice dialing 9-1-1 (without hitting send of course!) and help your child memorize your phone number. Encourage your child to seek out a community helper, such as a police officer, if he ever gets lost in a public place. Review your fire evacuation plan and Stop-Drop-and-Roll as a family. Make sure your child knows how to get out safely and where to go to meet you in the event of a fire.
